Welcome to the website of the „Workgroup School-based
Emergency Medical Services” (WG SEMS; Arbeitsgemeinschaft Schulsanitätsdienste).
Our workgroup is responsible for medical attendance of
about 6,520 students, teachers and visitors at all three vocational schools in
Neumünster (Germany):
- Elly-Heuss-Knapp-School (European School)
- Walther-Lehmkuhl-School
- Elly-Heuss-Knapp-School Outpost Bachstraße (European
School)
- Theodor-Litt-School
Currently, the WG SEMS consists of about 12 volunteers
(m/f; Summer 2008).
Annually approximately 125 patients are attended.
The major task of the WG SEMS is prevention and first
line treatment of medical emergencies at school.
In case of a medical emergencies at school the
secratary gets notified of injured or ill persons and their location in school.
The secretary then informs the SEMS by internal phonecall or announcement.
After being alerted the SEMS-team fetches the equipment
and gets further information by the secretary. The team usually reaches the
patient in less than 80 seconds (after alarm).
If an ambulatory care is not possible and it is clear
that the patient needs care by a physician, the SEMS-team alarms the local
emergency medical service.
The nesessary base qualification for becoming a member
of the WG SEMS is a first-aid-course with special qualification in using AEDs
and graduating our internal module “Emergencys at school”, a total of 24
lessons.
Weekly group meetings at school are arranged, where the
students are able to get the higher qualification “School medic [Schulsanitäter;
Sanitäter im Einsatzdienst]” (in modules; 140 hours at all) after a final exam.
Due to their previous vocational training some
SEMS-team members already have an even higher qualification (EMT or paramedic;
Rettungssanitäter or Rettungsassistent). This is because you can get a
high-school-graduation (Abitur) by visiting a vocational school in Germany after
several years of carrying out a profession.
The eqipment at all schools consists of a standardized
EMS-rucksack, a suction unit, a stretcher (often spineboard) and a cellphone. At
some schools there also is an automatic external defibrillation unit (AED) and
medical oxygen.
